New gloves see fewer injuries and boost carbon reduction..
Two of APCL’s most important priorities are worker safety and carbon reduction. And by partnering with a new glove supplier, APCL’s Cammell Laird facility has won an award for its continued commitment to both.
APCL subsidiary Cammell Laird has named Traffi their new preferred supplier, with the intention that they should provide the absolute best protection for workers.
Since using the new gloves, hand injuries at the Birkenhead shipyard have reduced by two thirds. There has also been a reduction in new glove usage due to their increased durability, which has helped cut waste.
But there was another major bonus to using Traffi. The company specialises in gloves which not only provide excellent protection but are also better for the environment.
The gloves are more sustainable than what was previously used on site due to the fact that they are carbon neutral, they come in recyclable cardboard wraps and they are certified after laundering. Cammell Laird are set to have avoided 100 tonnes of CO2e emissions by June 2025.
Steve Gibney, Director of HSEQ at APCL Group said: “Cammell Laird was delighted to win this award.
“First and foremost, this initiative was about finding gloves which provided the absolute best protection for our workforce. We have an excellent safety record here but we are always looking to improve. And since using the gloves we have seen a reduction in cuts of 66%.”
Steve added: “But another clear bonus is Traffi’s commitment to being carbon neutral. We too are committed to reducing CO2 emissions. We were recently awarded Government funding for a cutting-edge Green Shore Power Project, the first of its kind in the UK and provide a zero-carbon onshore power solution.
“Our commitment to worker safety and carbon reduction are both vitally important, so it has been hugely beneficial to be able to achieve both at the same time.”
Adrian James, Director at Traffi said: ‘It's a privilege to partner with Cammell Laird on their journey towards a safer and more sustainable future - we've seen a very positive results in reducing both hand injuries and carbon emissions, and there is unlimited potential moving forward together’.
