APCL leads the way as work starts on green shore power projects..

16 Oct 2024

Work has now officially begun at two APCL facilities to deliver groundbreaking clean energy schemes.

Spades have hit the ground at both A&P Falmouth in Cornwall and Cammell Laird in Birkenhead on projects which will remove the dependence of vessels undergoing repair, refit or build on fossil fuel-based power supplies in favour of energy derived from green sources.

The £12m A&P Falmouth shore power project will see the facility provide the UK’s first multi-vessel flexible shore power connections on Cornwall’s Atlantic Peninsula. As well as reducing CO2 emissions, the technology will also reduce noise import. The project was made possible thanks to the Zero Emissions Vessels and Infrastructure competition (ZEVI) funded by UK Government and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK.

Further north on the banks of the River Mersey, a £7m project at Cammell Laird is also underway. This scheme has been part-funded by a £3.5m grant from the UK Department for Transport’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (CMDC4).

Both projects mean vessels in each respective shipyard will not have to rely on their marine fuel engines for power. Instead, they will be powered by onshore energy derived from green sources.

Appointed contractor Integrum will now carry out the HV upgrade to the facilities which will enable the delivery of clean power to vessels alongside and in dry dock at the sites.

The new phase of work marks the beginning of a six-month civils project comprising two main work packages. The first will include an upgrade to the existing site HV distribution substations, with a full site wide asset replacement of ageing infrastructure. Also included in the works is a relocation of some current assets into new external GRP solutions for Substation No1-B and Substation 5. In addition, an extensive HV cable overlay installation will allow the facility to increase the site’s capacity for the new shore power solutions. Package two involves the installation of new HV connection points across the facility for the shore power units.

David McGinley, CEO of APCL Group – the parent company of both facilities - said: "“This is a key milestone in the project and an exciting step towards delivering the installation of the new shore power system at our North West and South West facilities.

“Sustainable shore power plays a vital role in global and national efforts to reduce the impact of the maritime industry on the environment. Our strategy at APCL Group is to achieve Net Zero across our operations by 2030.”

Both sites recently hosted events to mark the beginning of the work. Attending the event included representatives from the Cammell Laird project team and civils contractor Integrum.

The Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (CMDC4) is funded by the UK Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by Innovate UK. CMDC4 is part of the Department’s UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) programme, a £206m initiative focused on developing the technology necessary to decarbonise the UK domestic maritime sector.

APCL company A&P Falmouth is also developing a £12m cutting-edge Green Shore Power Project following funding from ZEVI. The Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure (ZEVI) scheme is part of the Government’s UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) programme.
